Remodeling Your Kitchen on the Cheap: Fresh, Affordable Ideas

While it used to be a simple place where mom cooked the family meals, today’s kitchen is turning into a multipurpose room for the whole family. Remodeling trends include opening up the kitchen to other living areas, upgrading to more efficient appliances, and adding storage and multiple workstations where guests and family members can socialize and interact. No longer just a place for cooking, the kitchen is becoming the center of the American home.

“The kitchen is really the heart of the home now. It’s a gathering place. The things that people used to do in the family room gets done in other places now but everyone has to eat,” said Sean Ruck, a spokesperson for the National Kitchen and Bath Association

Remodeling a kitchen is one of the most popular ways of upgrading a home. Projects can vary from an inexpensive do-it-yourself weekend to a total gut-and-rebuild that can run well into the tens of thousands of dollars. Ruck says that many do-it-yourselfers with a minimal budget can start by simply painting the walls and cabinets and replacing hardware like exposed hinges and drawer pulls. Floors, moldings and baseboards can also be replace and updated for a new look.

Bigger remodels involve the cabinetry which is the most important element of a kitchen. Because the cabinets must be built around the appliances, experts recommend starting by carefully considering what size and kind of appliances you’ll really need. Many people spend tens of thousands of dollars remodeling their kitchens with spectacular appliances then never use them. After all, there’s little need for someone to get a $2,500 industrial strength stove when the majority of their diet is comprised of take-out and frozen food.

Simon Coltman, a designer from Atlanta, Ga., says that as people grow more health conscious, the typical American kitchen will likely change. Those who opt for fresher foods and from-scratch cooking will utilize less freezer and refrigerator space. Contrary to some designers, Coltman sees a trend of kitchens becoming more compact and efficient.

“I really think about food, health and lifestyle when I design a kitchen and I know a lot of designers just want to do lavish backsplashes and fancy moldings. I believe the future of American kitchens will be about health living,” said Coltman.

Joanne Cannell, a San Francisco-based kitchen designer, also noted that people are looking for more “green” energy efficient appliances and materials. New and unique countertops such as those made of wood, granite or black tile are also becoming popular. Some larger homeowners are also adding small televisions and workstations in the immediate vicinity of the kitchen.

In any kitchen remodel that involves cabinetry or the relocation of appliances, efficiency and safety should always be taken into consideration. Appliances should be placed in a kitchen in a fashion that allows for ease of use in the order of routines. Dishwashers should be fairly close to sinks while stoves and ovens should be within a distance or across from the refrigerator. If gutting the walls and doing a total remodel, the placement of electrical outlets is critical. Cabinetry is the most expensive part of a kitchen and can run into the tens of thousands of dollars. Roger Mattice, president and owner of Urban Designer Kitchens in Houston, Texas, says that it is also the most important element of the room because it’s the first thing that someone sees.

“Homeowners should always start off with the appliances they want because everything in the room needs to be built around that, particularly the cabinetry,” said Mattice. “The primary motivation is that the kitchen has just gone out of style. It’s now a primary gathering point and people just want it to look as nice and up-to-date as possible

Kitchen cabinets are an important part of any kitchen cabinet design. The kitchen cabinets lend a trendy look to the kitchen and the right cheap or discount cabinets enhance the overall look. It is worthwhile to spend some time and effort in planning the cabinets in the kitchen.

It is observed that many people consult professionals to help them plan the cabinets in the kitchen. It is important that the finish of the kitchen cabinet flows smoothly with the theme or color scheme adopted.

Cheap kitchen cabinets are often available at discount home stores and with cheap cabinet retailers in the neighborhood. These discount cabinets are generally made of photo-simulated wood and thin laminates. Even if real wood is used, it is generally of very poor quality.

The drawer construction of these cabinets is very poor and the pieces do not fit in snugly with each other. The drawers do not generally glide in and out very smoothly. It also helps to know if they are on metal extensions or on cheap plastic tracks. The creaking of the hinges is also associated with poor kitchen cabinets that are cheaply available.

Many big cabinet manufacturers, who make the unfinished cabinets in bulk, sell them at discounted cabinet rates. At times small retailers are also known to sell these cabinets cheap, as they do not fit the grade. The laminating of cabinets and edging of panels require good precision machining quality. This is not available in custom cabinets.

It is important to plan the available budget for kitchen cabinets in redesigning the kitchen. There are countless cabinet styles and cabinet designs available that can be bought at fair prices. It may seem a good bargain at first, but in the long run, they are a more expensive proposition. Cabinets need to be repaired and even replaced sooner or later. The additional expenses incurred are than the discount for your kitchen cabinets.

Advice About Kitchen Cabinets

When planning a new home or remodeling an older one, the kitchen cabinets make one of the most important investment decisions a homeowner will face. Well designed kitchen cabinets can make food preparation chores and clean-up much more efficient. In addition, the cabinets are the first thing a person notices when entering the kitchen, so their style and appearance play a big role in overall home decor.

The 3 Types of Kitchen Cabinets

There are three classes of kitchen cabinets to choose from when building. These are stock, semi-custom, and custom. Stock cabinets are already built and require the shortest wait when installing. They are also the least expensive option. However, they are also the choice that will be the least tailored to your own specific needs. While stock cabinets should hold your supplies adequately, you might have special needs and interests that would make more individualistic cabinets desirable.

Semi-custom cabinets do not require as long a wait as truly customized kitchen cabinets, but they are not built until the order is made. These cabinets can fit your spaces more precisely and feature options like a lazy susan. They generally take at least a month to be built. True custom cabinets are crafted according to the home owner's specific needs, and can take several months to be completed.

Materials for Kitchen Cabinets

The material chosen for kitchen cabinets will affect the price greatly, with hardwoods being one of the more expensive, but durable, options. The more fashionable styles also drive the price up. One style that is in vogue right now are top cabinets with glass doors. These look great, but you'd better keep the contents neatly arranged or they will look messy. There's no "stash and hide" with these cabinets.

If remodeling an older kitchen, the cabinets are again one of the most important decisions. If the doors and drawers no longer work adequately, replacing them makes sense, unless you have your heart set on that vintage look. Good older kitchen cabinets can get a face lift by painting or possibly stenciling them.

They can also be professionally refaced. In many cases this is preferable to replacement, since the quality of craftsmanship in older homes is often excellent, while new cabinets, especially cheaper ones, might prove to be a disappointment.

It's estimated that the kitchen cabinets make up about half of the cost of building a kitchen. That makes them a major investment, so it pays to get educated about your options.
